Amundsen Sweeps Roosevelt in Doubleheader

October 2, 2012
By Lauren_Recchia

The Amundsen Vikings boys softball team was glad to finally put two games in the win column Tuesday.

The Vikings (2-8, 0-8) defeated the Roosevelt Rough Riders in a non-conference doubleheader at Amundsen, winning game one 13-3 and game two 14-3. Both games were finished in five innings. Senior left-fielder Rony Pinelo was 7-for-8 on the afternoon with seven RBI, and he was glad to help his team get their long-awaited first victory.

“It feels good, especially for the seniors,” he said. “All we want to do is win for Amundsen.”

The Vikings piled up six runs in the fifth inning of game two to seal their victory, including a 2-run home run by Sam Murphy, his second homer of the game. Pitcher Christian Ojeda started game one and went five innings, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. Pitcher Charlie Tapia went five innings in game two, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.

“Charlie and Christian were happy that they won today,” said Pinelo. “Sam got his first home runs too. (Roosevelt) is a team that we’re supposed to beat, so it feels really good.”

Pinelo and his teammates know that Tuesday’s  doubleheader sweep will give them a boost as they get set to face some tough conference opponents as the season winds down.

“These were must-win games,” Pinelo said. “We’re happy that we finally got these wins and hopefully we come out in practice tomorrow and do what we have to do.”
