LANE WINS PUBLIC LEAGUE SOCCER TITLE OVER YOUNG

Lane and Whitney Young have battled over the years for academic and athletic success on and off the field. Lane won this matchup Thursday night as they captured the Public League soccer championship for girls with a 2-0 victory over Young(12-7-4).
Sophomore Jasmin Carrera scored both goals to lead the Indians(17-3-1) to back-to-back city titles while winning their 26th straight game against Public League competition.
Lane beat Young by shutout for the second time this season while limiting the Dolphins to only eight shots attempted.
“If you are not from the city, you don’t understand what it means(to win the Public League championship),”Lane head coach Mike Wasielewski admitted after the contest held under the lights at Lane Stadium. “to the kids it means everything. This is just as good as a regional championship. We have bigger goals.”
“It means a lot to us(to win city),” Carrera said. “That was one of our goals for the season. Now, we got to win state.”
“They dominated the first half, but we had our chances,” Young head coach Spero Mandakas said after the loss. “We’re right in the game. We comeback in the second half and we don’t finish our chances. Our girls played great.”
One reason why Young stayed in the game was the play of goalie Rachel Hobert. Hobert made 11 saves including stopping Carrera twice on penalty kicks in the first half.
Lane outshot Young 18-8 in the final as Hobert turned in a fine performance in a losing cause.
Midfielder Liceth Robles led Lane on defense as Young had only three shots at the net in the first half.
Carrera, who has scored 22 goals, put Lane ahead by scoring on a 17-foot shot just four minutes into the match.
Carrera sealed the title with an empty net goal with 44 seconds remaining.
“For a sophomore, she is way ahead,” Wasielewski said on the sophomore sensation. “She’s a skilled player. We’re lucky to have her.”
“She’s the best player in the city,” stated Mandakas.
Carrera even played goalie in the second half on a penalty kick. Ana Hernandez was given a yellow card to give Young a penalty kick with 29 minutes left in the game. Carrera took over as Young’s Meg Robinette fired the shot over the net.
To say Lane has dominate city soccer would be an understatement. During this 26-match winning streak against city teams, Lane has outscored and outclassed opponents 140-3.
The question now is how will Lane do in the upcoming state playoffs? Last year, Lane was shutout by New Trier 5-0 in the sectional round.
Lane will have to beat Taft and Evanston to win the Maine East regional. The Indians would likely face unbeaten Loyola in the Evanston sectional.
