Mystery Labyrinth in Manor Park

April 4, 2012
By Patrick Boylan

Manor Park in the Ravenswood Manor Neighborhood is the recipient of a work of guerilla art. A neighbor, or perhaps neighbors, installed a labyrinth in the north end of the park overnight Sunday or Monday.

The labyrinth is made of temporary materials: chalk or flour and some light string pegged into the earth. It is difficult to see until you are standing nearly on it. However a helpful sign, in sidewalk chalk, shows the entrance.

A labyrinth is often confused with a maze. Labyrinths have a single path to follow. It is often used for spiritual and personal meditation.

A maze has many paths, twists, turns and dead ends. Typically you enter a maze and search for a goal, the center or an exit.

The Bulldog explored the path laid into the ground. It fits the definition of a labyrinth.

Neighbors in the area told us they didn’t know when or why the labyrinth was created. Sarah Reiser, a resident who helps care for the park, told the Horner Park Advisory Committee Monday the labyrinth was created Sunday or Monday and doesn’t seem to pose any danger.

Reiser told the council she’s noticed people wandering around the park, apparently following the labyrinth.
