“The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a HEAT ADVISORY which is in effect from noon to 8 pm on THURSDAY, June 28. Forecast highs range from 100 to near 105 degrees. Prolonged exposure to this heat can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.”
Tomorrow is going to be a hot one, if anything has been learned living through the past Chicago heat waves it is to take them seriously. Put simply heat kills, the elderly, infants and young children are the most vulnerable to its effects but anyone can be made ill by over exposure to sun and dehydration.
Take the time to call on your neighbors without the benefit of air-conditioning. These visits are lifesavers, during days of heat emergencies. If your friend or loved one is showing symptoms of dehydration or heat stress (flushed face, dry lips, hot skin with no perspiration) move them to a cool place, such as one of the cooling centers manned by the Department of Family Support Services.
These cooling centers are located through out the city the closest to the 47th Ward is at 4740 N Sheridan Rd. and is open tomorrow 9:00am to 5:00pm. There are other locations which may be opened if the need arises all public libraries, senior centers and park district buildings. Our own 47th Ward office at 4243 N Lincoln Ave. is opening their doors to anyone needing a place to cool down.
