47th Ward Clean Up Day on Saturday

April 22, 2012
By Jack Lydon

The Riverbank Neighbors spruced up their wonderful slice of riverfront at Berteau and the Chicago River on Saturday morning during the 47th Ward Clean Up Day.  The Ward Clean Up Day sponsored by 47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar also included a collection of electronic waste–old televisions, computers, printers, cell phones, etc.  The “e-waste” drop off and disposal effort is an excellent example of government and private industry working together.  At no cost to the taxpayers, the City of Chicago has partnered with Supply-Chain Services, Inc., pick up and dispose of tons of e-waste.  SSI then disassembles and strips out ferris metals and toxic materials.  SSI is paid by the manufacturers of the electronics to deal with hazardous materials they create.  75 people from the 47th Ward and surrounding wards had dropped of electronics at the Department of Streets and Sanitation collection point by 12:00.
