Absentee Aldermen: Pawar Missed 80% Committee Mtgs

October 6, 2012
By Patrick Boylan

A report broadcast by WTTW’s Chicago Tonight notes that Ald. Ameya Pawar missed 80 percent of his city council committee meetings, though he maintains a perfect record of attending City Council meetings.

“The committee meetings are the bread and butter, the nuts and bolts of the job. You have to attend them because that’s where all the data is presented and argued and debated,” the Better Government Associations’ Andy Shaw told WTTW. “When you miss what sounds like 80 or 90 percent of the committee meetings, you’re missing discussions on all of the key issues that your constituents send you there to represent them on, and that is simply unacceptable.”

“Committee attendance isn’t an indication of how well an alderman is performing,” Pawar told WTTW.

“It comes down to priorities,” Pawar told CenterSquare Journal.
