AP report says Illinois knew of group home issues

March 28, 2011
By Patrick Boylan

A report by the Associated Press says problems at group homes in Eastern Illinois were known by state officials two years before those problems led to the death of Paul McCann.

McCann’s death has led to allegations of assault against staff members of the group home he resided in.

The 2008 death of Dustin Higgins, also in an Eastern Illinois home run by the same nonprofit foundation has led to murder charges against staff members.

“We’ve clearly seen that the system failed the people who lived in the Graywood facilities,” Illinois State Rep. Greg Harris told the AP. “This case makes you heartsick to read about it.”

Read more about the issue in the San Francisco Examiner.
