Peterson Avenue Sewer Work

August 22, 2012
By Sheila Pacione

Reported by the 40th Ward Gazete Newsletter

The Chicago Department of Water Management will be installing new sewer pipes under W. Peterson Avenue, from North Shore Channel to N. Artesian Avenue, and under N. Fairfield Avenue, from W. Peterson Avenue to W. Devon Avenue.

The old pipe dates back to 1915 and needs to be replaced. The area bounded by Devon on the north, Ardmore on the south, Western on the east, and North Shore Channel on the west will benefit from improved drainage and reduced risk of flooding.

Work begins shortly, and the city expects the job to be completed by mid to late December. Restoration of the damaged streets/parkways will be completed in late May 2013.

Access to homes and businesses will be allowed at all times. Traffic restrictions are as follows:

  • Peterson, North Shore Channel to Western – Starting September 3, 2012, the east bound traffic lane will be closed, and one lane of traffic in each direction on the north side (west bound) of Peterson will be maintained.
  • Fairfield, Peterson to Devon – Staring September 3, 2012, Fairfield will be closed to “through traffic” during working hours (7:00 am to 5:00 pm). Local traffic will be allowed at all times and one lane will be left open after working hours.

The Department of Water Management will post “No Parking” signage as needed. All parking spaces on the north side of Peterson will be eliminated to allow for moving traffic. Parking on the south side of Peterson will be allowed outside of work hours, but cars must be moved by the start of the next workday. Parking on Fairfield will also be permitted outside of working hours, providing room for traffic to pass.
