Under a pilot program proposed for five wards including the 32nd, the 47th and the first, shoppers in Ravenswood would be offered bags manufactured with potato and corn starch instead of plastic, according to a report in Progress Illinois.
The program is part of a program to ban the use of plastic bags at large Chicago retailers.
Retailers of more than 5,000 square feet will take part in the pilot, the site says. The starch bags can hold up to 22 pounds, which is more than current plastic bags, the report states. Consumers will be charged a nickel a piece for paper or the starch bags.
